An Intriguing Past

Live Side-by-Side with the 19th Century

The past shines brightly in modern day Columbus, Georgia. George Parker Swift, a pioneer cotton and textile manufacturer from Massachusetts, moved to Georgia in the 1830's to establish several mills throughout Upson County. Swift was later drawn to Columbus after the Civil War with his eyes set on the city’s impressive transportation routes by way of the Chattahoochee River. Looking to create a new mill in Columbus, he was attracted by the combination of water power and river transportation available.

The people of Columbus awaited the opening of the Swift Textiles Inc. mill in anticipation of bountiful employment opportunities. In late 1866, a majority of the mill was completed and ready to take raw cotton and turn it into a finished fashion product. Sparked by the Civil War’s demand for textiles, this remarkable town grew into a lively metropolis with help from booming production at the Swift Textiles Inc. mill. Today, this surrounding historic area is teeming with stories, landmarks, and long-held traditions – inviting newcomers and locals alike to make history of their own in Uptown.
